Health Benefits of Ingredients

Orange

Did you know that one orange contains roughly 80% of your daily vitamin C? This is great for supporting your immune system, especially during the winter months! Oranges are also super hydrating and even contain 3 grams of fiber! Fiber is wonderful for digestive health and regulating blood sugar.

Cinnamon

Cinnamon may contain anti-inflammatory properties which could lower your risk of certain diseases. It also may lower blood sugar levels and even delay gastric emptying. Cinnamon has even been used to fight certain bacterial and fungal infections.

Pumpkin Spice

This spice blend is usually a mix of cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger and clove all of each contain antimicrobial properties as well as antioxidants. These are important for keeping cells healthy by fighting off free radicals, which can cause cell damage over time.

10 BENEFITS OF LEMON WATER https://healthygrocerygirl.com/2018/12/28/10-benefits-of-lemon-water/ Fri, 28 Dec 2018 10:18:13 +0000 https://www.healthygrocerygirl.com/?p=56492 Hey Friends! Welcome back to the blog! As we celebrate the beginning of 2019, we want to share 10 incredible benefits of drinking lemon water! We hope these benefits can gear you up for a happy and healthy new year!

1.    Lemons are rich in vitamin C! Lemon water is a great way to support the body’s immune system.

2.    You may think that lemons are acidic due to their tangy flavor! However, lemons have an alkalizing affect on the body once digested. Drinking warm water with lemon juice every morning may help maintain proper pH balance of the body.

3.    Lemon juice has anti-bacterial properties, which may help the body fight infections.

4.    Warm lemon water may help with weight loss! Research studies show that lemons support digestion and may increase the body’s metabolic rate.

5.    Lemons antibacterial properties can also support dental health and prevent gingivitis.

6.    Lemon water is a great way to help stay hydrated! Plain water can get boring. Lemon water or a combo of fresh lemon slices + fruit infused waters is a fun, natural way to flavor and encourage drinking more water!

7.    Research studies have linked daily lemon consumption with helping to lower blood pressure, in combination with a heart healthy diet and walking or regular exercise.

8.    A study published in the American Society for Clinical Nutrition concluded that people who consume more vitamin C have less risk of wrinkles and dry skin. Lemons are rich in Vitamin C! Vitamin C also supports collagen production, the wrinkle preventing protein that naturally occurs in skin.

9. Warm lemon water can prevent constipation and encourage regular bowel movements.

10.    Lemons are nutrient dense, not only are they packed with vitamin C, lemons also contain calcium, iron, magnesium and phosphorus.

For supplements I take a multi-vitamin, vitamin D and probiotic every day. Culturelle® Health & Wellness capsules you can take with water or easily pour the contents into a smoothie. They safely and naturally can help restore the balance of good bacteria in your digestive tract, where 70% of the body’s immune system resides. LUNCH

For Lunch I’ve been trying to have one big salad everyday! Right now I’m loving these ready-to-eat grab-and-go salads from Whole Foods. You could easily create this salad at home however they are only $5 and they make it easy for this busy new mama to eat well during this season of life when I’m juggling new mom life and work. In addition to salad I’ll also have some crackers and hummus.

SNACKS

In the afternoon I usually grab a protein bar – I’m a big fan of Go Macro plant- based protein bars!

If I’m still hungry a little bit later, I may grab and an apple and some nuts like walnuts or almonds!

DINNER

For dinner we also change it up. I love cooking dinner in the crockpot because it’s easy! Tonight I’m making this Creamy Large White Lima Bean Slow Cooker Soup.

BEFORE BED

Once I put Ella to bed for the night, I like to make a cup of chamomile tea and or Magnesium Water. Both help calm my postpartum nerves and settle my busy mind from the day. I will also have a pre-bedtime snack whether it’s another small bowl of oatmeal or a slice of toast with peanut butter.

MORINGA MORNING LATTE https://healthygrocerygirl.com/2018/04/23/moringa-morning-latte/ Mon, 23 Apr 2018 11:14:47 +0000 https://www.healthygrocerygirl.com/?p=49575

Moringa… ever heard of it? Moringa has been around for a long time however is becoming more popular in the health and wellness scene. Some would even call it a superfood! While superfoods are not a magic cure, they can help nourish your body in addition to a real, whole foods diet. There are a variety of superfoods and it may seem overwhelming to decipher from foods that are a fad and foods that are truly nourishing. Superfoods are essentially nutrient dense and versatile ingredients, think chia seeds, coconut or cacao to name a few.

Today we’re chatting all about one of current favorites, Moringa! While moringa has been around for a long time, it is gaining popularity and recognition due to its high content of vitamins, minerals and several antioxidant properties.

What Is Moringa?

Moringa comes from a tree that is native to the Himalayas in northwestern India. It is also called the ben tree, horseradish tree and drumstick tree. Moringa now grows in many tropical, subtropical, and semiarid areas throughout the world, including Hawaii! Since the Moringa tree can be grown in these environments, it’s a great source of nutrition throughout the entire year.

Nutritional Highlights

The nutritional benefits that come from the Moringa tree are found in the leaves and pods, also called drumsticks. The leaves are a powerhouse of nutrients containing a significant amount of B vitamins, beta-carotene, vitamin C and K, protein, manganese, calcium, iron, magnesium and phosphorous. This plant was first described as the miracle tree since it was a popular medicinal herb.

TEAS & TIPS FOR RELAXATION https://healthygrocerygirl.com/2018/03/12/teas-tips-for-relaxation/ Mon, 12 Mar 2018 11:07:29 +0000 https://www.healthygrocerygirl.com/?p=48160 Hi Friends! Welcome back to the blog. Today we’re chatting about rest, self-care and teas that support the nervous system!

Personally, I know that I’m the type of person who gets anxious or worried easily. Over the years I’ve become more aware about this trait and have put in an effort to care for my physical, emotional, spiritual and mental well-being to help reduce my occasional anxiety. Some stressors we can’t avoid, but we can build techniques that help us better handle stress so that it doesn’t affect our body, mind or emotions in such a negative way.

For today’s blog post we’ve partnered with Traditional Medicinals to chat about teas that support the nervous system. I drink at least 1 – 2 cups of tea everyday and many of you know who have followed Healthy Grocery Girl over the years, I’m a fan of a big fan of Traditional Medicinals! I’d love to share 3 of my daily habits to help reduce stress and promote relaxation.

These are teas that I’ve enjoyed prior to pregnancy and will start drinking again postpartum. You can learn more about my favorite pregnancy teas here.

TEAS FOR RELAXATION

Chamomile With Lavender helps settle your nervous system and relax your digestion system, especially when stressed or tense.* This tea is an herbal blend of chamomile, lavender and lemon balm. It has a floral and bittersweet flavor profile.

Nighty Night Valerian helps you mellow out and get a good night’s sleep.* This tea i blend features valerian root, passion flower and lemon balm. Valerian is an extremely popular herb in Western traditions and its use for occasional sleeplessness was first recorded by Greeks in the second century. This tea has a mild, bittersweet & minty flavor profile.

Stress Ease Cinnamon helps to relieve stress, irritability and promote relaxation.* This tea is a blend of skullcap, cinnamon bark and licorice root. Skullcap is part of the mint family!

I typically buy our tea from Sprouts Market however they are widely available at so many stores!

3 SELFCARE TIPS TO REDUCE STRESS & IMPROVE RELAXATION

UNPLUG

There is something about being on our phone, computer and watching television that keeps the brain “going, going, going”. While social media is a wonderful tool to connect, be inspired and share, it also has a dark side. Some people may start to feel anxious, less-than and depressed the more time they spend on-line viewing other people’s highlight reels and “perfect” photos. I believe in moderation. You don’t need to delete your APPS or accounts. But try taking time-off from being online once in a while and see how you feel!

BREATH WORK

My favorite stress-fighting technique is deep, slow breaths which can help move the body towards a state of relaxation. Studies have also shown that breath work, known as Pranayama, and yoga can help reduce anxiety, pain, blood pressure as well support immune and digestive health.I practice deep breathing techniques throughout the day and right before I go to sleep. Sometimes I don’t feel particularly stressed, but I still practice deep breathing, and I notice how much I actually really needed it. Life can become routine and we often don’t even notice that we’re walking around in a state of fight or flight.

FRESH AIR & MOVE

There is an abundance amount of research that shows the positive correlation between fresh air and physical movement with overall health as well as mental health. I try and get outside at least once a day for a walk as well as practice yoga or get to the gym a few times a week. You’re only one workout away from a better mood “they” say!

Share with us your go-to healthy habits to reduce occasional anxiety and support a healthy nervous system below!

LACTATION COOKIES & TEA + GIVEAWAY! https://healthygrocerygirl.com/2017/11/28/lactation-cookies-tea-giveaway/ Tue, 28 Nov 2017 15:39:10 +0000 https://www.healthygrocerygirl.com/?p=45185 Hi Friends! Welcome back to the blog. I love tea and make a cup every single day. I also love cookies, is there anything better than a fresh warm cookie (or 3!) from the oven? Even before my husband and I found out we were pregnant I was aware and fond of a company called Munchkin. I have seen so many mommas rave about and use their products. That being said, I am so thrilled to partner with Munchkin on today’s post blog and for a giveaway to help celebrate the expecting mommas in the HGG Community!

As an expecting Mama myself, I am so excited about Munchkin’s Milkmakers Lactation Cookies, Baking Mixes & Tea.

LACTATION TEA

Milkmakers Lactation Teas are made with quality, natural, USDA Organic ingredients, are naturally caffeine-free and really tasty! Munchkin suggests drinking 1 – 2 cups per day to help increase milk supply.

LACTATION COOKIES

If you’re a Mom looking to learn how to increase your milk supply, Milkmakers offers a delicious solution. Made with traditional ingredients that naturally help boost breast milk supply, Milkmakers pre-made cookies and cookie mixes are a nutritious option for nursing moms. Key ingredients include brewer’s yeast, oats, and flax seed. These cookies (chocolate chip, and salted chocolate caramel flavors) are even safe while pregnant which means if you’re a planner like me – you can try them even before you little one arrives and then stock up so you’re ready to go! To note, the Oatmeal Raisin cookies contain Fenugreek.

Milkmakers ready to eat cookies are perfect for busy days or on the go. The baking mixes, available both traditional and gluten-free, are great if you prefer that homemade warm cookie from the oven experience! The cookies are also dairy-free, soy-free and contain no artificial colors, flavors or preservatives. One to two cookers are recommended per day to help breastfeeding moms reap the full benefits Milkmakers cookies.

I first tried the gluten-free Chocolate Chip cookies first using the “It’s A Mix!” baking mixes. I followed the cookie making instructions on the back of the package to experience what they taste like all on their own. The results are that they are delicious and I will have no problem eating 1 – 2 of these cookies a day! Even my husband tried them and loved them! They also have a booklet that includes a variety of fun recipe ideas which inspired me to add some extra fun ingredients to my next batch of cookies. I added my go-to Chai Spice blend which gave these cookies a tasty spicy kick! You could also add cacao powder, nut butter, cinnamon, pumpkin pie spice, nuts, dried fruit… the options are endless!
